The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has officially notified the Ghana Water Company Ltd of its intention to join the nationwide strike against illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.
In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Ltd, Timothy Nyame, General Secretary of PUWU, stated that the decision to embark on the strike was made during a meeting held on October 1, 2024, and reinforced at another meeting on October 7, 2024.
“The leadership of Organised Labour decided to embark on a nationwide strike action against issues pertaining to illegal small-scale mining,” he wrote.
“We hereby write to officially notify you that PUWU, and all its members, except Production and Maintenance Units, shall join in this nationwide strike, starting from Thursday, 10th October, 2024.”
The strike is part of Organised Labour’s efforts to pressure the government to address the devastating effects of galamsey on the environment and public health.
He emphasized that PUWU counts on the cooperation of the Ghana Water Company Ltd during the strike.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners has expressed concerns over the strike, urging Organised Labour to review its decision.
