Qatar 2022 : Akufo-Addo visits Black Stars players before Portugal clash

President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has departed Ghana for Qatar ahead of Ghana’s debut 2022 FIFA World Cup match against Portugal.

Prior to Thursday’s game, the President is scheduled to speak with and motivate the technical team and the Black Stars players.

In Group H, the Black Stars are paired with Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea.

Thursday’s match against Portugal, who is widely predicted to advance out of Ghana’s group, has piqued the interest of the country’s soccer faithful.

Supporters hope to see a performance of vengeance, at the very least, against Uruguay.

Despite the Black Stars’ best efforts, Uruguay was unable to advance to the World Cup semi-finals in South Africa in 2010 thanks to a goal-line handball clearance by Louis Suarez.

Many people are looking forward to Ghana’s match against Portugal, and perhaps the President’s attendance will be a good omen for the Black Stars when they face the Portuguese men’s national team.

Earlier, President Akufo-Addo said he was optimistic that the Black Stars will win this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“I am of the firm conviction that Ghana will not only participate in the competition but will make the whole nation and by extension the African continent proud, with a great performance,” the President made the prediction in a speech read on his behalf by the Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare, at a dinner.
