Queen Mother freed as Police probe suspected kidnapping in Kwahu

The Queen Mother of Kwahu has been released on the orders of the Inspector General of Police after a dramatic dawn incident at the Kwahu Paramount Chiefs Palace in Abene.

The Police Service has also launched a formal investigation into the operation that led to her detention, with the Police Professional Standards Bureau directed to examine how the events unfolded and recommend sanctions for any officers found at fault. Security has since been tightened across Kwahu to reassure residents and maintain calm.

The trouble began around 4 a.m. on Monday when armed men stormed the palace. Witnesses said the attackers wore what appeared to be police uniforms and claimed they were from National Security.

The sound of repeated gunfire jolted residents awake and sent panic through the community. In the confusion, the assailants allegedly seized the Queen Mother, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua, and moved her from the palace.

Eyewitnesses described the group as heavily armed and coordinated, raising questions about whether they had professional training or were posing as security personnel. During the raid, the gunmen also took the official Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the Kwahuhene. Tracking information obtained by palace officials suggests the vehicle is headed toward Accra, though its exact location has not been disclosed for safety reasons.

Investigators have not yet determined the motive behind the raid or the alleged abduction. For now, residents remain on edge as police work to piece together what happened and who was behind the attack.
