The Queen Mothers of the Central Market, Kejetia Market, Race Course Market, Suame Market, and Bantama Market, all in Kumasi, have expressed deep disappointment over Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s failure to attend a scheduled meeting.
The traditional authorities of the markets, who are custodians of a significant aspect of the Ashanti Region’s rich cultural heritage, were left waiting in vain for hours after Vice President Bawumia confirmed his attendance but failed to show up.
The meeting, scheduled for 2:00 PM, saw the Queen Mothers and their subjects waiting until 6:00 PM before learning unofficially that the Vice President would not attend.
This incident has been perceived as a sign of disrespect towards the traditional institutions, which are seen as the foundation of the nation’s cultural and social structure.
The Queen Mothers, who had set aside their busy schedules and left their businesses, expressed their frustration at being treated this way, especially in light of the current economic challenges that make trading difficult.
One of the Queen Mothers stated, “This is a grave affront to our traditional leadership and a slap in the face to the good people of the Ashanti Region. We demand an explanation and an apology for this unacceptable behavior.”
The Queen Mothers’ emphasized their commitment to upholding and respecting traditional authorities and expect the same respect from national leaders.
