A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Kwadwo Nsafoa Poku, has sparked debate about worker attitudes and systemic challenges affecting productivity during rainy mornings in Ghana.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, following a heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorms, the entrepreneur observed that many workplaces record low staff turnout when it rains.
According to him, employers often receive poor responses from staff during such conditions, attributing the situation partly to the timing of rainfall and a lack of motivation among some workers to leave their homes.
“The period of rainfall determines the nature of the morning or entire day,” he stated.
Mr. Nsafoa Poku contrasted the situation with his experience in the United Kingdom, where, he said, workers make deliberate efforts to report to duty regardless of harsh weather conditions.
He, however, acknowledged that the disparity is not solely due to attitude but also structural challenges within Ghana.
The entrepreneur pointed to poor road networks, weak drainage systems, and buildings constructed on waterways as key contributors to flooding, which often leaves commuters stranded and unable to access their workplaces safely.
He further noted that many workers reside in densely populated and underdeveloped communities, far from urban business centres where most offices are located. This, he said, makes it difficult to access transport, especially during heavy rains.
Despite these challenges, Mr. Nsafoa Poku urged Ghanaian workers to find ways to improve attendance and productivity, while also calling attention to the need for improved infrastructure to support commuting during adverse weather conditions.
