Release Awutu Senya East NDC PC immediately – Mahama tells IGP

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to immediately release the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate (PC) for Awutu Senya East, Ms Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

Writing on Facebook, the 2024 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress condemned the arrest and detention of Ms Okunor, describing it as an attempt to silence the opposition.

He urged the IGP to reconsider his actions and release Ms Okunor, stressing that justice is a crucial prerequisite for maintaining peace and stability in the country.

Mahama’s call comes after the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, alleged that Ms Okunor was arrested and detained without reason.

Although a weapon was found in Ms Okunor’s car, Mr. Gyamfi maintains she had all the necessary registration documents.

The police have not commented on the matter, but the NDC has condemned the arrest and called on supporters to storm the Cantonments Police Station where Ms Okunor is being held.
