The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lambasted the Electoral Commission (EC) for failing to release the Provisional Voter Register (PVR) on time, sparking concerns about the commission’s competence and integrity.
With only six days left before the exhibition of the PVR, the NDC claims the EC’s delay is a deliberate attempt to hinder scrutiny of the register.
“This is grossly unfair! The EC’s lack of promptness is either due to incompetence or a deliberate attempt to dump a sub-standard PVR on us,” Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC’s Director of Elections, exclaimed.
The NDC had requested the PVR on July 18, but the EC only responded on August 8, promising to release it on August 14. However, the party was told on August 14 that the register would not be available until August 16.
“This leaves us with only six days to review and dispatch the register to over 38,000 polling stations nationwide,” Dr. Boamah lamented.
He criticized the EC’s IT department, citing past failures, including the chaotic 2023 District Assembly Elections and recent network failures.
“The EC’s posturing and incompetence can plunge Ghana into anarchy if not addressed immediately,” Dr. Boamah warned.
The NDC demands the immediate release of the PVR, questioning the whereabouts of stolen Biometric Voter Registration kits and potential illegal registrations.
“The sanctity of our electoral system must be upheld. We call on CSOs, religious bodies, and diplomatic missions to scrutinize the EC’s activities,” Dr. Boamah emphasized.
