Relieving Nkwatia Presby SHS Assistant Headmaster of his duties disappointing – Victim’s Uncle

Emmanuel Sarpong, the uncle of the female student allegedly assaulted by the Assistant Headmaster (Academics) of the Nkwatia Presby Senior High School is unhappy with the decision of the Education Service (GES) to relieve him of his duties.

According to him, the education governing body should have considered a less severe punishment for the embattled Assistant Headmaster.

Speaking to Metro News in an interview on Tuesday, Mr. Sarpong indicated that to err is human hence the GES should not have gone that extreme.

“We are all humans.”

“GES went too far to relieve him of his duty and they could have just punished him,” he told Metro TV’s Zoe Anita Odei.

“GES should not have relieved him of his duties,” he added.

He disclosed that neither the Ghana Education Service nor the management of the Nkwatia Presby SHS have reached out to the victim since news of the incident went viral.

Contrary to reports making rounds in the media, Mr. Sarpong also indicated that his niece has received no psychological assistance.

Background

The Assistant Headmaster (Academics) of the Nkwatia Presby SHS allegedly assaulted a student of the school.

The incident was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.

In the viral video, the Assistant Headmaster, Mr. Derrick Yeboah, was captured slapping and beating a student, who is believed to be a second-year student.

The GES in a statement said it was “disturbed” by the video and that it “unequivocally condemns the actions of the Assistant Headmaster.”

The GES said the Assistant Headmaster had been relieved of his duties and that the student was receiving medical care and counselling.

The GES also said that the Eastern Regional Director of Education was liaising with the school authorities and the relevant law enforcement agency to investigate the matter.

The GES assured the general public that it was committed to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all students across the country.
