Remanding protestors for unlawful assembly excessive punishment – Prof Asare

A Fellow at Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has described as “excessive punishment” the remanding of the Stop Galamsey Now protestors.

Thirty-nine protesters arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstration at 37 Intersection in Accra were remanded by an Accra Court on Tuesday, September 24.

28 suspects were remanded into police custody, while 11 were sent to prison custody.

“The court remanded 28 of them into Police custody and the remaining 11 into Prison custody,” the Ghana Police Service said in a statement.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, confirmed that 30 of the accused persons will reappear before the court on October 8, while nine others will appear on October 11.

“The remaining suspects will be put before the court to face justice,” she added.

However, Professor Stephen Asare believes the court harshly remanded the protestors for unlawful assembly, especially when flight risk is low.
