A new community football league has been launched in the Okere constituency in Ghana’s Eastern Region, with organisers hoping to use the sport to bring communities together and educate young people about pressing social issues.
The Okere Unity Community Football League was officially launched at Twum-Guaso on Saturday, 24 July, bringing together traditional and religious leaders, youth groups and residents from communities across the constituency.
The tournament will run from July to October 2026, with organisers describing it as more than a football competition.
Alongside the matches, young people are expected to receive education on HIV/AIDS prevention, the dangers of drug abuse and other issues affecting communities.
The initiative has also received support from Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo, who has pledged to continue supporting the league as it expands.
Through the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Mr Agongo provided footballs, a trophy, goalkeepers’ gloves and shin pads for the launch.
He said his support would not end with the Okere competition, indicating plans to extend his assistance to similar initiatives in other parts of the country.
“This is about our young people. When we invest in sports at the community level, we invest in their future,” Alhaji Agongo said.
He added that the items provided were only a starting point and that he intended to do more to support the initiative beyond the Eastern Region.
Mr Agongo has over the years supported community development programmes in areas including education and healthcare, including assistance with school infrastructure, school fees and medical bills for people in need.
Sports as a tool for social engagement
The Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who attended the launch, praised the organisers for using football as a platform for community engagement and social education.
He said initiatives of this nature could help bring communities together while creating opportunities to communicate important messages to young people.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah said community sports programmes could also provide a useful platform for policy education, social intervention and public awareness campaigns.
“The President is totally committed to the transformation of sports infrastructure in Ghana, and initiatives like this at the community level complement that vision,” he said.
The league is expected to draw teams from different towns and villages within Okere, giving young people an opportunity to compete while strengthening ties between communities.
Traditional rulers and religious leaders who attended the launch also expressed their support, while youth groups and residents turned out in large numbers for the ceremony.
Organisers say they hope the competition will help identify promising football talent in the constituency while keeping young people engaged in productive activities.
Beyond the football matches, they believe the league can become a platform for sustained conversations about issues affecting young people and encourage stronger community participation in addressing them.
With Mr Agongo pledging further support and organisers looking beyond the current tournament, the Okere Unity Community Football League could eventually grow beyond a local competition into a wider youth development initiative.
