Rental laws are not “biting enough” – Housing Committee’s Ranking Member

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee and Techiman South lawmaker, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has stated that Ghana’s rent-related laws are outdated and insufficiently enforced to ensure accountability within the housing sector.

According to him, the country continues to operate under rent legislation dating as far back as 1963, which no longer reflects current housing realities.

“Ghana is operating under outdated rent laws which need to be reviewed to suit current situations,” he said.

He made the remarks during an interview on Metro TV’s Home Owners Show with Hanna Atiase on Saturday, May 16, 2026, where discussions focused on building collapses, unfair rent practices, and Ghana’s worsening housing challenges.

Mr. Korsah argued that weak enforcement mechanisms within the rent control system are undermining justice for both landlords and tenants.

“The rent control department needs biting teeth to be able to enforce the laws effectively,” he said, stressing the need to upgrade the Rent Control Department into a fully empowered authority with stronger regulatory and enforcement capacity.

He further noted that such reforms are necessary to address growing disputes in the rental market and improve fairness in housing administration.
