Respiratory diseases loom as Bawjiase-Kasoa road construction dust pollutes air

Residents living along the Bawjiase-Kasoa highway are at risk of contracting respiratory diseases due to the excessive dust generated by the ongoing road construction.

The dust, which has become a nuisance to road users and businesses in the area, has led to increased transport costs, reduced sales for food vendors, and constant cleaning of wares for commercial center operators.

According to residents, the contractor, General Construction and Development Limited, has failed to water the stretch to reduce dust, despite the contract duration expiring.

The situation is worse for residents living in communities such as Jei Krodua, Gyan Nkwanta, Anomawobi, Mankomeda, Papase No 1 and 2, and Oklu Nkwanta, who are exposed to dust daily, leading to discomfort and potential respiratory infections.

Meanwhile, Metro News gathers that the construction firm, General Construction & Development Limited, has resolved not to apply bitumen on the 15 kilometer Bawjiase-Oklu Nkwanta stretch as a result of government’s hesitation in rolling out funds.

Our checks reveal that the construction firm is unsatisfactory with the mode of payment by government until the payment ceased completely accounting for the delay in work progress.

However, work on the 1 kilometer Oklu Nkwanta-Ofaakor stretch which is a little over one kilometer and awarded to same contractor as an after thought is progressing but in a slow manner.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizela Tetteh Agbotui, has called on the government to release funds to the contractor to facilitate progress on the project.
