Former Ghana international Matthew Amoah has disclosed the behind-the-scenes role he played in NAC Breda’s decision to sign André Ayew, describing his contribution as limited in scope but decisive in outcome.
Speaking in an interview, Amoah explained that while he was not directly involved in contract negotiations, the club’s leadership turned to him for expert guidance after reports of Ayew’s possible move began circulating.
“It was only about 10 percent, but it was a very important 10 percent,” Amoah said. “The club hierarchy consulted me about his fitness and overall condition once the rumours broke in the media.”
As a former top striker and a member of NAC Breda’s coaching staff in charge of the club’s attacking and forward units, Amoah’s opinion carried weight. He revealed that he had been closely following Ayew’s physical condition through training footage from Ghana.
“I told them he looked fit because I had watched several of his training videos at his father’s club, Nania FC, where he trained with players like Wakaso and others,” he noted.
However, Amoah cautioned the club against confusing fitness with match sharpness, stressing the need for patience and proper conditioning.
“I made it clear he could be fit but not match-fit. If we signed him, we would need to work on him and prepare him properly before expecting full impact,” he added.
Ayew, who had been without a club for months, eventually completed the move to NAC Breda and has since begun settling into the squad, with his experience and leadership already making an impression both on and off the pitch.
