Rhode Island officials have assured Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, of the state’s full support and hospitality throughout their stay in the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The assurance was given during a colourful flag-raising ceremony in Providence, Rhode Island, held to officially welcome the Black Stars to the United States as the tournament gets underway.
The event brought together senior Rhode Island government officials, representatives of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), members of the Ghanaian community, and dignitaries from both Ghana and the United States, underscoring the strong cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Rhode Island.
Addressing the gathering, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Emmanuel Victor Smith, urged the Black Stars to carry the hopes of the nation with pride and dignity.
“Today, they carry with them the hopes, prayers and aspirations of our entire nation,” he said.
“They wear not merely a football jersey; they wear the colours, pride and identity of Ghana.”
Ambassador Smith reminded the players that their role at the World Cup extends beyond football, stressing that they would serve as representatives of both Ghana and the African continent.
“Every pass, every tackle, every goal and every act of sportsmanship will reflect the character and spirit of our nation,” he stated.
He further encouraged the team to represent Africa with distinction.
“Millions across Africa will be cheering you on and looking to you as ambassadors of African excellence, resilience and talent,” he added.
Rhode Island rolls out red carpet
Governor Daniel McKee expressed excitement about hosting the Black Stars at Bryant University during the tournament, describing the occasion as a celebration of unity and cultural exchange.
“We are honoured to host the Black Stars here in Rhode Island,” he said.
“Today’s flag-raising represents what this tournament is all about, bringing people together.”
According to Governor McKee, the World Cup presents a unique opportunity for people from different countries and backgrounds to connect, celebrate and learn from one another.
“For the next five weeks, people from all walks of life will have the opportunity to meet each other, watch matches together, celebrate together and learn more about one another,” he noted.
He also encouraged visitors to explore Rhode Island’s attractions and assured the Ghanaian delegation that they would feel at home throughout their stay.
Football strengthening Ghana-Rhode Island ties
Rhode Island Treasurer James Diossa described Ghana’s decision to select Rhode Island as its World Cup base camp as a significant moment for the state.
“When we received the news in January that Ghana had selected Rhode Island, we felt like we had won the World Cup,” he remarked.
Mr Diossa disclosed that state officials had spent months preparing for Ghana’s arrival and engaging in initiatives aimed at strengthening relations between Rhode Island and Ghana.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Embassy in the United States announced plans to establish temporary consular support centres in Boston and Philadelphia during the tournament.
The embassy said it would also work closely with local authorities to ensure the safety, welfare and smooth movement of Ghanaian supporters travelling to support the Black Stars throughout their World Cup campaign.
