Former Cameroon captain and head coach Rigobert Song has been appointed as the head coach of the Central African Republic national team, marking a new chapter for the Fauves de Bas-Oubangui.
The experienced Cameroonian tactician takes over with the expectation of revitalizing the team after their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Song brings a wealth of experience, having led the Indomitable Lions to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they secured a historic 1-0 victory over Brazil. He also guided Cameroon to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated in the knockout stages by Nigeria. During his tenure, he managed 23 matches, with six wins, eight draws, and nine losses.
As a player, Song had an illustrious career, earning 137 caps for Cameroon, participating in four World Cups (1994, 1998, 2002, and 2010), and captaining the team in five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He was instrumental in Cameroon’s back-to-back AFCON victories in 2000 and 2002 and holds the record for the most consecutive AFCON appearances.
The spotlight will now be on Song as he prepares the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. A pivotal match against Ghana on October 6, 2025, looms large, with fans and officials alike looking to him to instill discipline, confidence, and a winning mentality in the squad.
