Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has expressed concerns that Carlos Queiroz’s tactical approach could hinder Ghana’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, who worked alongside Keane during their time at Manchester United, was appointed head coach of the Black Stars in April after Otto Addo’s dismissal.
The Portuguese tactician has built a reputation for organizing defensively solid teams, a quality that contributed significantly to Sir Alex Ferguson’s success at Old Trafford.
Despite his strengths, Queiroz’s international coaching career has produced mixed results during spells with Iran, Colombia, Portugal, Egypt, Oman, and Qatar.
Speaking to ITV Sport, Keane warned that Ghana must avoid becoming overly defensive under their new coach.
“I just hope they don’t become too defensive. One of Carlos’ biggest strengths is the defensive side of the game,” said Keane.
Brilliant coach, huge questions marks about him as a manager. Certainly, I thought he had the personality of a dead fish when I worked with him.
“But as a coach I had good sessions with him, Now that he is coaching there are question marks about him so whether he is too defensive that might backfire on him.”
Queiroz’s first game in charge of the Black Stars ended in a 1-1 draw with Wales in the Black Stars only warm-up match ahead of the World Cup.
The Black Stars have left Virginia for Rhode Island to continue preparations ahead of their first game against Panama on June 17.
