Senegal captain Sadio Mané has announced his retirement from international football following the country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to one of the most successful international careers in African football.
The 34-year-old made the announcement after Senegal suffered a 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32, a result that ended the Teranga Lions’ World Cup campaign and marked the final chapter of Mané’s remarkable journey with the national team.
The Al-Nassr forward confirmed his decision in an emotional statement, expressing gratitude to the Senegalese people for their unwavering support throughout his international career.
“I know that I have given everything I have for this flag, and I have sacrificed everything for Senegal, and I have spared no effort to make our people happy,” Mané said in a statement reported by Senegalese newspaper Le Quotidien.
Mané also paid tribute to the fans who stood by him during both the triumphs and challenges of his time in national colours.
“The fans’ support and trust in me was a source of strength and motivation to achieve everything we have accomplished, and I will always be grateful for this relationship that will remain firmly rooted in my heart.”
“I will proudly put my experience at the service of my country, whether through working within the technical staff, as a coach, or through any administrative role that serves the future of football in Senegal. Long live Senegal,” he said.
