Sam George dismisses claims One Million Coders centres are fake

Samuel Nartey George has dismissed claims that the government’s One Million Coders Programme is a hoax after visiting several training centres in the Greater Accra Region where sessions were ongoing.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations toured centres at Accra College of Education, Gbegbeise JHS and the Mamprobi Community Information Centre on Wednesday as part of a monitoring exercise.

The visit followed allegations circulating online that some of the listed training centres, including the Accra College of Education site, did not exist.

Speaking during the tour, Mr George said the programme was active and already making an impact.

“This programme is real, it is active, and it is delivering impact,” he said, urging the public to ignore what he described as misinformation about the initiative.

The minister interacted with trainees, facilitators and coordinators at the various centres to assess the progress of the programme and the challenges facing participants.

He said the One Million Coders Programme remained a central part of the government’s digital transformation agenda and was aimed at equipping young people with practical digital and coding skills.

“This programme is about creating opportunities,” Mr George said. “We are building a future where young people across the country have access to the digital skills they need to compete globally and contribute meaningfully to national development.”

The minister also inspected infrastructure and internet connectivity at the centres to determine their readiness for both in person and online learning.

He praised facilitators and participants for their commitment and assured them that the government would continue to improve the programme based on feedback from trainees and coordinators.

The One Million Coders Programme is being implemented by the Ministry for Communication Digital, Technology and Innovations in partnership with technology firms and training institutions across Ghana’s 16 regions.

The ministry says monitoring visits will continue in other parts of the country as efforts are intensified to expand the programme nationwide.
