The Ghanaian food industry has been plunged into mourning following the passing of renowned entrepreneur and spice manufacturer, Hajia Zenaib Jumai Meizongo, founder of the popular brand Samu Spices, widely known as Saamu.
Hajia Zenaib passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2026, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.
In accordance with Islamic tradition, she was laid to rest on Monday afternoon, July 6, 2026.
Widely respected as the driving force behind Samu Spices, Hajia Zenaib built the brand from its roots in Nima, Accra, into one of Ghana’s most recognized names in the culinary space. What began as a modest venture eventually grew into a nationally embraced brand, known for its 16 varieties of spice blends designed to suit Ghanaian cooking styles and household preferences.
Under her leadership, Samu Spices became a symbol of quality, accessibility and innovation, producing widely used products such as Royal Yaji, multipurpose seasoning blends, and specialised meat powders. Her signature maxi packs, sold within the GHS 150 to GHS 200 range, helped make quality seasoning more accessible to homes across the country.
Beyond business, she was admired as a pioneering Ghanaian woman entrepreneur who proved that determination and vision could transform a small community-based venture into a nationally trusted brand.
Her passing leaves a significant gap in Ghana’s small and medium enterprise ecosystem, with tributes pouring in from customers, partners, and admirers who remember her not only as a business leader but also as a pillar of her community.
The Staff and Management of Ignite Media Group (IMG), together with the family of the late Hajia Zenaib Jumai Meizongo, have expressed deep sorrow over the loss. They extend heartfelt condolences to her children, siblings, relatives, and all who knew her, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult period. IMG also recognises her outstanding contribution to Ghana’s food industry and her enduring influence on the country’s entrepreneurial landscape.
She is survived by her family, her dedicated team at Samu Spices, and a legacy that will continue to live on in kitchens across Ghana every time a Saamu spice pack is used.
