Seven women have been arrested at Akyem Maase in the Eastern Region for allegedly possessing palm oil mixed with a potentially harmful industrial dye.
The Food and Drugs Authority says the substance, known as Sudan dye, is sometimes added to palm oil to deepen its red colour and make it more appealing to buyers. But it warns that consuming the dye can increase the risk of cancer related diseases.
Officials say the arrests form part of efforts to clamp down on the sale of adulterated food products. The seven suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The FDA has urged the public to be cautious when buying palm oil and to report any suspicious products, stressing that food safety remains a public health priority.
