A major rescue operation is underway after a building collapsed at Avenor in North Industrial Area, leaving one person in critical condition and raising fears that more people remain trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident happened on Sunday near Melcom Plus, opposite the Ashfoam showroom. The structure, believed to have been a residential building and a mosque, reportedly collapsed while it was still under construction.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the Service’s National Headquarters were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident to begin rescue efforts.
Providing an update on the Fire Service’s Facebook page, Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey said emergency crews moved quickly to search the debris for survivors.
The Fire Service said two people have so far been rescued and taken to hospital for treatment. One of the victims is reported to be in a very critical condition.
Rescue teams believe at least one or two more people may still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
The Director of Operations of the Ghana National Fire Service is leading the rescue mission, while heavy equipment has been requested to help responders gain access to parts of the wreckage.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel continue to search the site as efforts intensify to locate and rescue any remaining victims.
