The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially kicked off in Mexico City with a dazzling opening ceremony featuring global music icon Shakira, spectacular performances, and thousands of enthusiastic football fans.
The legendary Azteca Stadium, a historic football landmark, welcomed fans from across Mexico and the world, creating an electric atmosphere as the tournament returns to Mexico for the first time in 40 years.
Preparations for the event have not been without challenges. From major stadium renovations and airport upgrades to public protests and concerns over safety, organizers faced hurdles leading up to the World Cup. Yet, on Thursday, football took center stage, momentarily pushing aside all previous issues.
Local fan Javier Pérez, attending the opener with his family, said:
“We were lucky to get hospitality tickets, and it’s a unique experience. I have never been to a World Cup before, so to bring my family is wonderful. I just want Mexico to get off on the right foot, win today, and score a load of goals!”
