Sheikh Napari calls on President Mahama to involve religious leaders in galamsey fight

The Chief Executive Officer of the Light Foundation, Sheikh Abubakar Ali Napari, has called on President John Mahama to actively engage religious leaders in the ongoing national campaign against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Metro News, Sheikh Napari commended the President’s bold leadership in tackling the galamsey menace, particularly through the use of police and military interventions.

He praised the decisive actions taken so far, noting that they reflect a strong commitment to protecting the environment and public health.

“Galamsey has become a serious threat to our water bodies and the well-being of our people. It is encouraging to see the president take strong action,” Sheikh Napari stated.

However, he emphasized that more could be done by involving key community influencers—especially religious leaders—who hold deep-rooted trust and respect within their communities.

According to him, data proves 1,600 religious are within the confines of this country, making it a crucial role in shaping public attitudes and promoting ethical behavior.

“Religious leaders have the power to change minds and influence actions. If they are engaged in this fight, their voice could make a huge impact in discouraging illegal mining practices,” he said.

Sheikh Napari also praised President Mahama’s Goldbod initiative, describing it as a timely and innovative approach to promoting responsible and sustainable mining.

He believes the program presents a structured alternative to illegal mining and can significantly reduce environmental destruction if well implemented.

He also underscored the importance of community involvement and faith-based collaboration, expressing hope that a unified national front—backed by both policy and moral authority—could bring an end to the long-standing galamsey challenge.

“The fight against galamsey can be won if all stakeholders, especially those with moral influence, are brought on board,” Sheikh Napari asserted.

The Light Foundation continues to advocate for sustainable development and environmental protection across Ghana.
