SONA 2025: Gov’t offers free treatment to meningitis patients in Upper West Region

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government has instituted free treatment for persons affected by the meningitis outbreak in the Upper West Region.

The region has recorded 135 suspected cases, 22 confirmed cases, and 16 deaths as of February 17, 2025, prompting the government to take swift action to mitigate the impact of the outbreak.

President Mahama made the announcement in his first State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, as part of efforts to alleviate the suffering of those affected.

President Mahama further indicated that his administration is working to rollout Free Primary Healthcare Programme to eliminate financial barriers to basic healthcare access, a step towards achieving Goal 3.8 (universal health coverage) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

“As outlined in the 2024 Manifesto of the NDC, my administration is actively developing the framework for the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme,” President Mahama noted.
