SONA 2025: Mahama unveils ambitious sports development plan

President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a comprehensive plan to revolutionize sports development in Ghana, with a strong focus on youth development, transparency, and accountability.

Presenting his first State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday, February 27, President Mahama emphasized the critical role of school sports programs in nurturing young talent, citing that over 60% of Ghana’s premier athletes have emerged from these initiatives.

To build on this foundation, the government will invest in robust and well-structured school sports systems, creating better opportunities for young athletes to excel globally.

Transparency and accountability

President Mahama announced that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and other sporting authorities will be required to publicly disclose their budgets, ensuring citizens can track how funds are utilized.

This move aims to improve governance, rebuild public trust, and ensure effective resource allocation.

National Recreation Day

Additionally, President Mahama revealed plans to launch a National Recreation Day, a monthly initiative promoting community engagement, physical activity, and healthier lifestyles.

Mahama also directed the newly established Ministry of Sports and Recreation to ensure the GFA is held accountable for its operations, promoting responsible leadership, effective management, and proper financial oversight within the sports sector.
