Julius Malema has been sentenced to an effective five years in prison for unlawfully firing a gun at a political rally in Mdantsane in 2018.
The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters was sentenced by Twanet Olivier at the KuGompo City Regional Court.
Malema received five years on the main charge and a further two years on a secondary count. He was also fined 20,000 rand on each of three additional counts, with the option of six months in prison for each if the fines are not paid.
All sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of five years.
The case relates to an incident at an EFF rally in Mdantsane, where Malema was found to have discharged a firearm in violation of the law.
The ruling brings to a close a long running legal process stemming from the 2018 event.
