The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a South African national at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle over 30 kilogrammes of cannabis into the country.
The suspect, who arrived on a flight from Thailand on Monday, November 10, was apprehended through an intelligence-led operation conducted by NACOC officers at the airport.
A thorough search of his luggage uncovered the narcotic substance concealed in vacuum-sealed packages hidden within his personal effects.
In a related development, an airline staff member stationed at KIA has also been arrested for allegedly assisting the suspect to evade standard security checks.
A statement issued by NACOC said preliminary investigations suggest a coordinated attempt between the South African and the airline employee to traffic the drugs into Ghana.
Both suspects are currently in custody assisting the Commission with investigations.
NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other narcotic-related offences, stressing that stringent security and intelligence measures remain in place to detect and prevent such crimes.
The Commission cautioned that anyone found complicit in drug-related activities, irrespective of nationality or professional status, would face the full rigours of the law.
