Speaker Bagbin hails media’s watchdog role at Parliament event

Parliament has hosted a media soiree and recognition night to honour members of the Parliamentary Press Corps for their role in promoting transparency and accountability.

Speaking at the event, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, praised journalists for their commitment to accurate and responsible reporting, describing the media as a critical partner in Ghana’s democracy.

He said the press plays a vital role in bridging the gap between Parliament and the public by explaining legislative work and ensuring citizens are informed.

The Speaker commended the Press Corps for consistently providing accurate coverage of parliamentary proceedings and activities, noting that an informed citizenry depends on responsible journalism. He stressed the importance of continued collaboration between Parliament and the media to deepen public understanding of governance.

Mr. Bagbin also reaffirmed the media’s watchdog role, acknowledging the challenges journalists face, including misinformation and the pressure to remain impartial. He said Parliament remains committed to transparency and will continue to engage the media while improving public access to information.

He concluded by applauding the Press Corps for their creative storytelling, which he said helps make complex legislative issues accessible to a wider audience. He encouraged journalists to adapt to the changing media landscape, especially digital platforms, to ensure diverse voices are reflected in public debate.

At the ceremony, members of the Parliamentary Press Corps honoured the Speaker and the Clerk to Parliament for their leadership and support. Several journalists were also recognised for excellence in parliamentary reporting.
