Speaker Bagbin forms committee to probe vetting chaos

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has formed a 7-member committee to investigate the chaotic incident that occurred at the Appointments Committee room on January 30.

The committee led by Ho West MP Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah has 10 days to submit its report, and those found guilty will be made to pay for damages.

In addition, Speaker Bagbin has suspended four MPs including Chief Whips Frank Annoh-Dompreh and Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, as well as Deputy Chief Whips Jerry Ahmed Shaib and Hassan Tampuli, for two weeks with immediate effect due to their involvement in the chaos.

The chaos unfolded as the Majority insisted on continuing the vetting session beyond 10 pm, while the Minority vehemently opposed the move.

The situation escalated, with tables and microphones being destroyed, prompting police intervention to restore order.

Speaking on Parliament floor on Friday, January 31, Bagbin vehemently denounced the episode, calling it “disgraceful and deeply regrettable,” and cautioned that disruptive conduct is not covered by parliamentary privilege.

The Speaker expressed disapproval of the lawmakers’ behavior, saying that they “could not exercise a scintilla of emotional intelligence” and that the episode occurred at a very dire moment
