Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, has launched an investigation into allegations against Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, paving the way for his potential impeachment.
Agyebeng is accused of procurement violations, rights abuses, and improper appointments within his office, according to a petition submitted by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu.
The Chief Justice has asked Agyebeng to respond to the allegations, which include breaches related to vehicle acquisitions, wrongful arrests and detentions, and infringements on the right to information.
“This is to forward to you a copy of the petition dated 30th April 2024 sent to the Office of the President, which was forwarded to the Office of the Honourable Lady Chief Justice on 6th May 2024. Kindly provide your comments on the matters raised to enable the Honourable Chief Justice to determine if a prima facie case has been made out,” the Chief Justice wrote in a letter to Agyebeng.
President Akufo-Addo forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice, initiating the impeachment process.
Meanwhile, Franklin Cudjoe, founding president of policy think tank, IMANI Africa, has loaded on President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of being bias in his handling of petitions.
Mr. Cudjoe claimed that the President has refused to forward at least three petitions against a former Chief Justice and the current Electoral Commission (EC) to the Chief Justice, as required by law.
This is in contrast to the President’s swift action on a petition against the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng, which was forwarded to the Chief Justice with urgency.
