Stop attacking Firefighters – Tema Fire Commander to public

The Tema Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, ACFOII Patrick Sallah, has appealed to the public to stop assaulting firefighters and vandalising fire trucks during emergencies, describing such acts as criminal and harmful to public safety.

Speaking at the climax of this year’s International Firefighters Week in Tema, Mr. Sallah described such acts as not only criminal but also dangerous to the very communities firefighters are risking their lives to protect.

“This is a disturbing trend that threatens the safety of both our personnel and the general public,” he said. “Every time a firefighter is assaulted or a fire truck is damaged, it hampers our ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies.”

The event, held under the theme “Appreciating Our Heroes; Say No To Firefighters Assault and Fire Truck Vandalism,” brought together officers, stakeholders, and community members to reflect on the sacrifices made by fire personnel. The message resonated deeply, as speakers called for greater public cooperation and respect for the work of emergency responders.

Deputy Metro Coordinating Director of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Cherub Pokua Kwarteng, echoed the Commander’s concerns and called for collective responsibility. “We must protect those who protect us. Supporting the Fire Service is a civic duty,” she stated.

As part of the occasion, several outstanding active and retired officers were honoured with plaques and awards for their dedication, courage, and years of selfless service.

Commander Sallah reaffirmed that despite the challenges, firefighters remain committed to saving lives and property. “These attacks will not deter us—but we need the public to stand with us,” he stressed
