The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has directed all regional directors to immediately stop charging fees for using washrooms in hospitals.
In a letter dated April 16, 2025, the Acting Director-General, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akioryea, stated that washrooms are an integral part of hospital infrastructure meant to provide comfort for patients and visitors.
“The washrooms must at all times be kept clean and comfortable to prevent the risk of infection, improve perception of patient care quality and increase patient satisfaction,” the letter read.
The GHS described the practice of charging toilet fees as “exploitation” and warned that facility heads failing to comply with the directive would face sanctions.
“Failure by facility heads to adhere to this directive will attract sanctions,” Prof. Akioryea emphasized.
