Stop the ‘judicial coup’, reinstate Chief Justice Torkornoo – Minority tells Mahama

The Minority in Parliament has condemned President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing it as a “judicial coup” and a “flagrant abuse of executive power.”

Addressing a press conference, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Weija-Gbewa NPP MP, emphasized that the move is a direct assault on the independence of Ghana’s judiciary.

“This brazen action constitutes nothing less than a judicial coup, a flagrant abuse of executive power, and a direct assault on the independence of Ghana’s judiciary,” he stated.

The Minority believes the suspension is politically motivated, aimed at controlling the judiciary.

“This unlawful suspension is not about upholding accountability; it is about raw political control,” Jerry Ahmed added.

The Minority has demanded the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Justice, pending the final determination of all constitutional challenges by the Supreme Court.

“We demand the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Justice pending the final determination of all constitutional challenges by the Supreme Court,” the Minority stated.

Jerry Ahmed warned that any further harassment or intimidation of the Chief Justice would meet fierce legal and public resistance.

“Any further harassment, intimidation, or unlawful removal of the Chief Justice will meet fierce legal and public resistance,” he emphasized.

“The integrity and independence of Ghana’s judiciary are non-negotiable,” Shaib stressed.
