The incumbent Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kwadjo Asante, popularly known as Oboafo, has declared his intention to contest the upcoming general elections as an independent parliamentary candidate.
This comes after he lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in early 2024.
Despite efforts to calm the situation, Oboafo Kwadjo Asante has decided to defy the party’s decision and continue his political journey as an independent candidate.
Addressing hundreds of party supporters at Suhum after a mega walk organized to declare his intentions, he explained that the residents of Suhum had petitioned him to contest the December polls, and he had decided to heed their call.
The incumbent MP, who has been instrumental in implementing various development projects in the constituency over the past three and a half years, emphasized that he has an unfinished business with the people of Suhum and needs their support to continue.
His campaign was officially launched at the event, where he unveiled his posters and T-shirts with the slogan “Oboafo Toaso” (Oboafo Continue), signaling his determination to retain the parliamentary seat.
Kwadjo Asante, the incumbent first-time Member of Parliament, lost his second term bid to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly called Protozoa, who had 496 votes against 320 votes in the January 27, 2024, NPP Parliamentary primary.
After losing the primary, Kwadjo Asante, hasn’t been seen moving with the new parliamentary candidate, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, to any event but rather solely embarking on a series of community development projects across the constituency, serving notice about his independent bid.
Addressing the media after the declaration, the Kwadjo Asante, reiterated the rationale behind the move and urged his supporters to remain calm and desist from politics of insult and violence.
He, however, noted that he will be crowned as the Member of Parliament after the 2024 polls in the Suhum constituency to continue his good work.
Meanwhile, some present and former NPP executives have thrown their support behind the incumbent Member of Parliament, calling on the good people of Suhum to support Kwadwo Asante, as he is the only person who can develop the constituency.
