Google CEO Sundar Pichai has cautioned users against blindly trusting AI tools, highlighting their potential for errors and the need to use them alongside other information sources. In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Pichai said AI is helpful for creative tasks but emphasized that users must understand the limitations of current AI technology.
Pichai explained, “We take pride in the work we put in to provide accurate information, but state-of-the-art AI technology is prone to some errors.” He stressed the importance of a rich information ecosystem, pointing to Google Search and other products as more reliable sources for accurate information.
The comments come amid the rollout of Google’s Gemini 3.0, its latest consumer AI model, integrated into search as an “AI Mode” to compete with ChatGPT. Pichai described this as a “new phase of the AI platform shift,” aimed at offering users expert-like guidance while ensuring responsible usage.
Citing BBC research, Pichai acknowledged that AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity AI, have produced inaccurate summaries of news content, underscoring the need for careful oversight.
Pichai also highlighted Google’s ongoing investment in AI security, including open-source tools to detect AI-generated images. He emphasized that no single company should dominate AI technology, stating that the ecosystem must remain diverse and competitive.
As AI evolves rapidly, Pichai concluded, Alphabet aims to balance innovation with responsibility, moving fast to meet consumer demand while mitigating risks.
