Sunyani Central Prison has launched a piggery project aimed at equipping inmates with practical farming skills while boosting food production and generating income for the facility.
The initiative forms part of the Ghana Prisons Service’s Think Prisons 360 Degrees agenda, which seeks to strengthen inmate rehabilitation through vocational and agricultural programmes.
The newly established piggery currently has six pigs, made up of three mature pigs and three piglets. Prison authorities say the project will give inmates hands on training in pig farming, helping them acquire practical livestock management skills that could support self employment after their release.
Beyond skills development, the project is also expected to create an additional source of revenue for the prison while contributing to the nutritional needs of inmates and staff through the production of quality pork.
Officials believe the initiative reflects the prison’s commitment to rehabilitation by providing inmates with meaningful opportunities to learn employable skills and improve their chances of successfully reintegrating into society after serving their sentences.
