Suspects in Kasoa baby theft case remanded in custody

The three women involved in the alleged stealing of a baby in Kasoa have been remanded by the Ofaakor Circuit Court.

The three suspects Magdalene Nana Adwoa Boafo, 28, Faustina Binney, 32, and Eunice Koomson, 36, were arrested by the Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service on Friday July 19, 2024.

The suspects who pretended to be offering help to the mother of the one week old baby at the time she was eight months pregnant deceived her that they were taking the baby to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for treatment at the recommendation of medical staff at the Kasoa Polyclinic just the day she delivered.

They, however, returned later to inform the mother that the baby died while at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, raising suspicions.

Police investigations, however, uncovered that the baby was alive and being kept by one of the suspects, Eunice Koomson at Ablekuma in Accra.

According to the investigator Detective inspector Amos Kudah the suspects have been charged with two counts which are conspiracy to commit crime namely child stealing and child stealing contrary to Section 23 (1) and 93 of Act 29/60.

Despite a plea by counsel of the suspects Abdul Aziz Mohammed the court presided over by Isaac Oheneba Kufuor remanded them to police custody until July 26, 2024, as police continues to conduct further investigations into the matter ahead of actual hearing of the case.

Meanwhile, Metro News’ independent investigations have revealed that the suspects intended to steal the baby for one of them, Faustina Binney, the 36 years old resident of Ablekuma who had the child in custody at the time of arrest as she’s been struggling with child birth and that their pretense of assisting the mother and later faking the death of the baby was a ploy to catch her off guard.

Metro News has also established that the suspects were trying to take advantage of the victim, Abigail Addison, since they got to know that she was vulnerable and even left her first child under the care of the Social Welfare Department through an initial conversation they had with her.
