Suspension of USAID costs Ghana $78m – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Ghana has lost nearly $78 million following a decision by the United States to suspend support to some African countries.

Delivering a keynote address at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva on Monday, May 18, President Mahama said the development has had significant negative effects on Ghana’s healthcare sector and broader development agenda.

“In Ghana, health financing from bilateral and multilateral partners has significantly declined since 2025. Ghana lost $78 million in health funding following the closure of US aid programmes,” he told the Assembly.

He explained that the affected funds supported critical health interventions, including malaria control programmes, maternal and child healthcare, nutrition initiatives, HIV/AIDS testing, and the supply of antiretroviral drugs.

President Mahama warned that the reduction in donor support poses a serious challenge to the country’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve public health outcomes.
