The Tamale Circuit Court has remanded two midwives from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga for one week in connection with a missing newborn at the facility.
The accused are to reappear on Wednesday, 18th June 2026.
The court action follows the disappearance of a baby at the hospital on Wednesday, 11th June 2026.
The Tamale circuit court’s decision is to give investigators ample time to continue with investigations to unravel the mystery behind the missing baby girl at the hospital.
In a press release issued 11th June 2026, Regional Director for Health Dr. John Ekow Otoo confirmed the 10th June incident. The Directorate said an immediate search was conducted within the facility after the case was reported, but the efforts yielded no results.
The matter was subsequently reported to the East Gonja District Police Command for investigation.
“The Service extends its deepest sympathies to the parents and family of the baby during this difficult period and assures them of its full support as investigations continue,” Dr. Otoo stated.
Dr. Otoo has set up a committee to investigate the matter. The Regional Health Directorate says it is working closely with hospital management, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant stakeholders to locate the missing baby and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He reassured the public that the safety, security, and well-being of patients, newborns, and all clients remain a top priority of the Ghana Health Service.
The Directorate is appealing to members of the public who may have any information regarding the whereabouts of the missing baby to contact the nearest Police Station, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate, or the East Gonja District Hospital immediately.
“Any information provided will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,” Dr. Otoo said.
The Ghana Health Service says it remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at reuniting the baby with the family and ensuring that investigations are thoroughly conducted.
In a related development, the Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has sympathized with the affected family. She pledged her support to the family during this difficult period.
