Teacher faces eviction after lending GH¢105,000 to banker who refuses to pay

Albert Avinyoh Wilson, a teacher at Sowutuom in Accra, says he is drowning in debt after lending over GH¢105,000 to a banker who has not paid back as promised.

Wilson, 36, told Crime Check TV GH that he earns GH¢700 a month but agreed to help the banker after learning about her financial struggles through one of his students. According to him, he first gave the woman GH¢10,000 by using his GH¢5,000 rent savings and borrowing the rest from friends who took quick loans.

The woman, who worked with Consolidated Bank Ghana, allegedly said she needed the funds for her import and export business and promised to repay with interest within a year. Later, she reportedly asked for an additional GH¢90,000.

Wilson said he did not have that amount but eventually sold a 2019 Nissan Sentra worth GH¢170,000 that belonged to his girlfriend’s brother living abroad. He claims the banker even introduced a buyer who purchased the car for GH¢90,000, which was then given to her.

In total, Wilson expected more than GH¢200,000 back, including interest, and says the woman assured him of a job at the bank since he has a commerce degree.

However, when repayment was due, the woman allegedly claimed her goods were locked at the port. Wilson says she later retrieved a land document she had given him as collateral, blocked his calls, and warned him never to visit her office again.

Desperate and under pressure from his landlord, friends, and the car’s owner, Wilson admitted to confronting her repeatedly at her office and home, even splashing water on her at one point. The woman later had him arrested, and the case was turned against him.

Wilson says his family intervened, and the banker agreed to pay GH¢5,000 monthly but has so far paid only GH¢33,000, sometimes less than the agreed amount. He now faces eviction and a possible arrest by the car owner if he cannot refund GH¢170,000 or replace the vehicle.
