Tension builds in Botoku following attempts to install rivalry chief

There is tension building up in Botoku Traditional Area in North Dayi in the Volta Region following attempts by some disgruntled persons to install a rivalry Paramount Chief for the area.

Despite the installation and gazette of a legitimate Paramount Chief, some disgruntled persons who are said to be led by Togbe Atakora VII, are also organizing themselves to have a new Paramount Chief Installed.

Kingmakers, therefore, described attempts by a faction to install a rivalry paramount chief as worrying and an affront to the peace the area is enjoying.

Botoku Traditional Area is located in North Dayi District of the Volta Region.

Residents of Botoku lived for 15 years without a paramount chief until a new paramount chief was installed for the area in April 2018 under the stool name Togbega Sei II.

The new Paramount was accepted into the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and gazetted on the 21st of December 2022.

Following the installation of Togbega Sei II, there were some disagreements by a faction in the Botoku traditional area. The faction is led by Togbe Atakora VII who describes himself as the Mankrado of Botoku.

According to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, any disagreements by any faction regarding installation or gazette of a chief must be challenged using laid down procedures.

The Regional House of Chiefs, therefore, disagree with the installation of rivalry chiefs in the region to prevent pockets of disagreements that endanger the peace of the region.

Botoku therefore recognizes Togbega Sei II as paramount Chief. Kingmakers from the area described attempts to install a rivalry paramount chief as worrying and an affront to the peace the area is currently enjoying.

Sporadic gun shots can be heard currently in the Botoku township with residents who say they may fled the town if nothing is done about the tension in the town.

Meanwhile, Rev. Dr. Worlanyo Mensah, Secretary to the Botoku Paramountcy in an interview with Metro TV was alarmed by the development.

He says Togbega Sei II was installed legitimately with all processes followed and wondered why some persons would want to undermine the peace Botoku Traditional area has been known for.

According the Secretary to the Botoku Paramountcy, such actions must not be countenanced, adding that people must be made to obey rules “not to seek personal interests in very important issue like this.”

Rev. Dr. Worlanyo Mensah alleged the involvement of a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Herbert Krapa.

He alleged that the Deputy Minister is the brain behind attempts to install a new paramount chief.

He was perturbed the peace of the area will be threatened if this activity is allowed to go head and warned of dire consequences in the coming days.

We reached out to Herbert Krapa for comments.
