Tension in Talensi: NDC Supporters Demand Withdrawal of DCE Nominee

Tensions are rising in the Talensi Constituency of the Upper East Region as a faction of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) publicly rejected the nomination of John Millim Naabwomya as District Chief Executive (DCE).

The group, which identifies as concerned and aggrieved members of the party, has demanded that President John Mahama rescind the appointment immediately.

Speaking at a press conference in Tongo on Sunday, April 13, spokesperson Charles King Luu expressed deep dissatisfaction with the President’s choice, citing Naabwomya’s alleged ties with the rival New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a betrayal of the party’s grassroots supporters.

“We cannot accept someone whose political loyalty is in question. His association with the NPP is well-known in this constituency,” Luu stated. “This decision risks splitting the NDC’s support base and jeopardizing our success in the 2028 general elections.”

The situation escalated further following a suspected arson attack that destroyed the NDC constituency office just two days after the announcement of Naabwomya’s nomination on April 11. Although investigations are still underway, local residents have linked the fire to the growing unrest over the controversial nomination.

The aggrieved members insist that unity within the party is at stake, urging leadership to prioritize internal consensus in such appointments.

“We are sending a clear message to the national leadership: we will not stand by and allow the party’s interest to be compromised. The nominee must go,” Charles King Luu emphasized.

Neither the nominee nor National Party Executives have officially responded to the concerns as of the time of reporting.
