Tetegu Floods: Residents worried over neglect by authorities

Residents of Tetegu in the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region are concerned about the seeming neglect by key stakeholders in the management of flooding situations in the town.

The situation is making the area vulnerable to flooding.

The spillage of the Weija Dam has been causing flooding at Tetegu.  Last year, a similar spillage resulted in heavy flooding in the area resulting in the loss of two lives.

Several properties were also destroyed and businesses were heavily affected. Several businesses are yet to come back to life as they lost their capital to the floods.

Though some persons in authority have in times past described the area as a flood-prone zone and a receptacle of the Densu River hence inappropriate for habitat residents hold a contrary view.

According to residents, the area only gets flooded at the spillage of the Weija dam and not as a result of rainfalls.

They suggest that poor management of the Weija Dam and the Densu estuary by managers of the dam and the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly is the cause of the flooding situation.

For years, the Weija Dam has not been desilted and the Densu River, according to residents, not been dredged according to the timelines spelled out in an agreement between the community and the Ghana Water Company Limited.

They are worried over the seeming neglect of the community by duty bearers despite its major contribution to the revenues of the Weija Assembly and the Ghana Water Company Limited.

This year, the impact of flooding on the community has been minimal as a result of proactive measures instituted by the Tetegu Development Committee.

The committee has invested some GHC 200,000 realized from the levying of community members into the dredging and embankment of the Densu River as a flood prevention mechanism.

However, the committee is unable to complete the work entirely as it has run out of cash and is therefore calling on stakeholders to assist the community.
