Ghana’s immediate past president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is convinced the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will bounce back and reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
According to him, the NPP’s track record under his government and that of former President John Agyekum Kufuor provides a solid platform for the party’s comeback.
Addressing party faithful on Friday, September 19, at the commissioning of a new NPP constituency office in Bantama, Kumasi, Akufo-Addo highlighted what he called the “enormous work” done under both administrations, insisting it will be the party’s winning ticket in the next election.
“The work the NPP did during my time and during former President Kufuor’s time is enormous, and it is that legacy we will build on to win back power in 2028,” Akufo-Addo said.
He also expressed worry about the current state of affairs under the John Dramani Mahama government, warning that the country is “not on the right path.”
Calling for unity among party faithful, he urged them to remain focused and committed to the goal of returning to government.
“We have all seen what is happening – you’ve all seen it. Things are not going well. But when we unite and do things right, I know that, with God’s help, we will reclaim power in 2028,” he encouraged.
In the 2024 presidential election, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) defeated NPP candidate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with 56.55% of the vote. In Parliament, after a re-collation of several disputed seats, the NPP ended up with 88 seats in the 9th Parliament.
