The Making of a Young Changemaker: Gota Lois Atsufe Quarcoo’s Journey of Voice, Leadership and Vision

Gota Lois Atsufe Quarcoo stood out from her days at Mawuli School in Ho. There she was not only deeply involved, but held significant leadership and responsibility, serving as producer (the highest rank) of the school’s news team, known as 3H News, and secretary to both the Debaters Club and the Chaplaincy Board.

This mix of journalism, leadership, and moral or spiritual oversight hinted at the broad scope of her interests: communication, critical thinking, community, and public service.

These roles contributed to sharpening her skills as a debater, writer, and orator. They provided a platform to exercise initiative, responsibility, and articulate communication long before her national or international recognition.

Breakthrough: “Best Orator, Senior 2023”

Gota Lois’s most visible breakthrough came in 2023 when she competed in the national public-speaking contest, the Orators Public Speaking Challenge (senior division). She delivered speeches that impressed judges and audience alike, passing through rounds of prepared speeches, impromptu speeches, and debate-format speaking. In the final round, she was matched in a mini-debate and emerged victorious, winning the title 2023 Senior Best Orator.

Her performance was characterized by depth, clarity, poise, and persuasive power, qualities judges highlighted as distinguishing her among 96 other contestants from across the country.

In recognition of her achievement, she received a prize package that included an educational trip to South Africa.

Rising on the continental stage:  ALAMAU 2024 Representation

Building on her national success, Gota Lois represented Ghana at ALAMAU 2024 (the African Leadership Academy’s Model African Union conference) in South Africa, where she attained the recognition of best press corp delegate. This points not only to her speaking and debating abilities, but to her ability to operate in a quasi-journalistic or media environment, reflecting her ambition and versatility.

Through ALAMAU, she engaged in diplomacy simulations, continental policy discussions, and broader African issues. This experience broadened her worldview, exposed her to pan-African dialogues, and deepened her appreciation for media, leadership, and youth advocacy.

Embarking on a media career

At age 17, Gota Lois found her feet as an intern at Media General where she was a production assistant on 3FM Sunrise (Johnnie’s Byte), political morning show. After months of practical production experience, Lois moved to Metropolitan TV (Metro TV) as a Newsroom Intern for 6 months.

A demonstration of an ambition to join Ghana’s media landscape

Her background in public speaking, journalism exposure and school media leadership gives her a rare blend of eloquent communication, critical thinking, and the ability to package information professionally and responsibly.

As at November 2025, Lois is a Production Assistant on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, the biggest political morning show in Ghana.

Now pursuing a degree at the University of Media Arts and Communication (UNIMAC-IJ), she is deepening her theoretical and technical grounding. Combined with her practical experience, this places her on track for a meaningful career in media, broadcasting, or public affairs.

Aside communication, Lois is a Co-Founder and a Co-CEO of McLoi Impact Foundation, a youth centered Non-governmental Organization.

She also serves as the Volta Regional Representative for Youth Parliament Ghana.

Significance and promise

What makes Gota Lois stand out is the breadth of her skill set and the clarity of her trajectory.

Public speaking and debate: mastery of articulation, persuasion, quick thinking, and critical reasoning.

Journalism and media: early media experience, reporting exposure, and understanding of newsroom processes.

Leadership and service: experience leading school media and clubs, with added moral or spiritual engagement through the Chaplaincy Board.

Academic preparation: formal media training that strengthens her ethics, storytelling, and professional standards.

Pan-African engagement: ALAMAU exposure that has widened her perspective beyond national boundaries.

In a country and continent where articulate, responsible youth voices are increasingly important in media, civic engagement, and policy dialogue, Gota Lois represents a new generation of informed, principled, and globally minded African changemakers.

What to watch out for?

As she grows in her media career at Metro TV or beyond, her grounding in debate and public speaking will help her navigate live interviews, high-stakes conversations, and broadcast situations with confidence. Her involvement in continental platforms like ALAMAU and Youth Parliament Ghana suggests potential for leadership roles in youth advocacy, civic journalism, or pan-African media.

Her education at the University of Media, Arts and Communication will help her develop stronger competencies in media ethics, storytelling, and production.

Given her roots in school news operations and chaplaincy, she may become a media advocate for youth issues, social development, or moral discourse.
