There Is No Political Will In Government To Punish Wrongdoing – Kwabena Agyepong

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has observed that the current difficulties the country is experiencing can be partly blamed on the lack of political will of government to punish wrongdoing.

According to the man gunning to become the next flagbearer of the NPP, people are now motivated to commit crimes and atrocities against the state because of the lack of will on the part of government to hold people responsible for their crimes.

Citing an example to buttress his claims, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong observed that he cannot understand why up until today no one has been punished at the Bank of Ghana following the banking sector crisis despite the existence of the Banking Supervisory Division.

Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews on Tuesday, February 21st, 2023, the NPP flagbearer stressed that even names behind the collapsed banks that took liquidity support but misapplied and misused them are walking as free men and women.

Among a number of examples, he concluded that these are clear indications that the government of the day lack the needed political will to punish wrongdoing.

In his estimation, there is the need for severe actions to be taken by government to serve as deterrent to others who may be contemplating committing similar crimes against the state.

“Always, its important that we have strong supervisory division of the Bank of Ghana. And so far, nobody has been punished at the Central Bank for what happened [Banking Sector cleanup] It’s very serious because there is supposed be a banking supervisory division. What happened during the banking sector crisis, nobody has been held responsible and again there is no political will to punish those banks that took liquidity support and misapplied and misused it,’ Kwabena Agyei Agyepong lamented.

He added that, “there is not enough political will and determination to punish wrongdoing. It is important that we do that to set a strong example.”
