Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, has slammed pro-NPP television station Wontumi TV over misleading information ahead of the December 7 parliamentary and presidential elections.
He stated categorically that this year’s elections will be held in a day—December 7—rejecting the ‘mercenary of a journalist’ claims on Wontumi TV.
In a video clip circulating on social media, a man believed to be a journalist falsely claimed that voting for the first 7 candidates on the presidential ballot will take place on December 7, while voting for the remaining candidates takes place on December 8.
“This is a total fabrication. There is only one election day, and that is December 7,” Professor Prempeh stated in a Facebook post.
“It is not true that voting for the first 7 candidates on the presidential ballot will take place on December 7, while voting for the candidates from Number 8 to 13 takes place on December 8. That would not be lawful.”
The video clip, which originated from a local language morning show broadcast on November 20, 2024, on Wontumi TV, a party-aligned radio station, has been flagged by Facebook for violating its community standards.
Professor Prempeh expressed concern that many people may believe the false information, emphasizing the need for fact-checking and critical thinking.
“Why must you sink so low, and treat your non-literate compatriots with such disrespect, if you believe your side of the contest represents a better option for the people of Ghana than your rivals?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Commission for UNESCO has launched a campaign to tackle misinformation and disinformation, with the theme “Verify First, Share with Caution.”
