The third batch of Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa has arrived safely in Ghana following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks in the country.
A total of 342 evacuees touched down at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, where they were warmly received by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe, and other government officials.
Addressing the returnees, Mr. Gyakye Quayson encouraged them to embrace forgiveness despite their experiences and assured them of the government’s commitment to supporting their reintegration into Ghanaian society.
For her part, Nana Oye Bampoe disclosed that evacuees interested in the National Apprenticeship Programme would be enrolled through the National Youth Authority to help them acquire and utilize their skills productively in Ghana.
The latest arrival marks another significant milestone in the government’s evacuation exercise for Ghanaians affected by the unrest in South Africa. Some of the returnees described their experiences as traumatic, likening the situation to a war zone and expressing no desire to return.
With the arrival of the third batch, the total number of Ghanaian evacuees brought home from South Africa now stands at nearly 1,000.
