Threats to our peace still loom, we must address them – Mahama to security agencies

President John Dramani Mahama has called on heads of security agencies to remain vigilant in safeguarding Ghana against both internal and external threats, stressing that proactive measures are essential to maintaining peace and stability across the nation.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, during a courtesy call by the heads of security, led by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, President Mahama outlined the current security challenges facing the country.

He emphasized that the fight against internal threats, such as chieftaincy disputes and armed robbery, must be intensified, while also addressing external risks, particularly those along the northern borders.

President Mahama made it clear that complacency is not an option for the nation’s security agencies.

“We still have threats to our peace that we must continue to address internally and externally,” he noted.

“Internally, these threats include chieftaincy disputes and incidents of armed robbery, while externally, we face dangers along our northern borders. We cannot let our vigilance down. There must be no vacuum.”

He urged the security agencies to work diligently, as they have done in the past, to prevent any breaches that could jeopardize Ghana’s peace.

“You must all continue to work zealously to make sure there is no breach of the peace in the country,” President Mahama said.

The President also announced plans to establish a Council of State that will oversee the formation of a controlling board for all security services, ensuring greater cohesion and coordination among the different agencies.

General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, the Chief of Defence Staff, assured President Mahama of the security agencies’ unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and stability.

He expressed confidence in the ability of Ghana’s security forces to face the challenges ahead, emphasizing that the agencies have been working together as a cohesive team.

“We want to assure you, Mr. President, of our loyalty, professionalism, and dedication,” General Oppong-Peprah affirmed.

“We’ve been working together as a team, meeting all the complex challenges of the security environment. By working together, we have been able to keep this country quiet and stable.”

General Oppong-Peprah assured the President that the security forces would continue to operate with even greater zeal and determination to ensure the nation’s peace remains intact.

“We are going to continue with even greater zeal to maintain the security and stability of this country,” he stated.
