Three people have died and several others sustained injuries after a fuel tanker carrying petrol burst into flames on the Suhum-Nsawam Highway on Saturday morning.
The tanker, which was travelling from Tema to Kumasi, was involved in an accident at Ntoaso on the Accra-Suhum dual carriageway around 5:19am, according to a press release issued by the Ghana Police Service.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The impact led to an explosion, with fuel splashing onto vehicles behind it and igniting a massive fire.
In total, six vehicles and four motorcycles were burnt in the blaze. Police confirmed that two unidentified male bodies were found at the scene, while another body was discovered in one of the burnt vehicles.
The victims were charred beyond recognition.
Four injured persons were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Police say officers have begun visiting hospitals in an effort to identify victims and support affected families.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service in Suhum and Nsawam responded swiftly to contain the fire, while efforts are underway to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow on the busy highway.
Authorities have urged motorists using that stretch of road to reduce speed and comply with police directives as investigations continue.
